New MD Consult Search Enhancements

MD Consult is pleased to announce some exciting new enhancements that include improved search results and practice guideline updates.

Search Enhancements:
  • Results at a Glance - A Summary showing the first 3 results in each content area. This feature simplifies user navigation and shows breadth of content available.

  • Improved Focus – Provides an easier, more prominent, and more effective method for refining book and journal searching to one of these information needs: Diagnosis, Etiology, Treatment, or Prognosis. Users can click one of those options under our newly placed “focus” drop-down box to obtain improved search results in books, journals, and practice guidelines. This new feature improves the values found in our existing advanced journal search feature and also extends it to user’s book searches.

Practice Guidelines Updates
Weekly updates now include abstracts of peer-reviewed practice guidelines and links to the full-text. They are searchable by topic and authoring organization.

Surgical Image Collection
A new content feature, Surgical Images, has been added to Clinical Insights, under the Current Practice tab. These images have been chosen on the basis of topics rated by residents as most helpful, and are viewable as thumbnails and linked to full-size. The first three sections - Pediatric, Head & Neck, and Skin and Soft Tissue are now available. Additional sections will be added in the months ahead with ultimately 1000 total images.

New Books Added to MDC Core:
  • Khatri: Operative Surgery Manual, 1/e

Book Description: This book provides practical guidance on the most common elective and emergency procedures. Each concise chapter follows the same format and contains standardized headings: position, incision, exposure and operative technique, and closure. Numerous illustrations detail the procedures, providing clarity at a glance. A focused preoperative preparation section is also included.

Because of this book’s strong appeal to surgical residents and medical students embarking on a surgical rotation or general surgery residency program, we are also featuring the procedures and accompanying images in Student Union.

  • Mettler: Essentials of Radiology, 2/e

Book Description: This best-selling radiology primer clearly explains the basic principles and clinical applications of plain film, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine. Written in straightforward, accessible language and assuming no prior knowledge of radiology, it provides an ideal introduction to the field. Over 550 digital images demonstrate every essential concept.

PDFs now available on MD Consult!

PDFs are now available for new Elsevier Journals and Clinics and for more than 30,000 articles dating back to 2002. Portable Document Format (PDF) preserves the fonts, images, graphics, and layout of the article.

An article has PDF availability if you see the words "PDF" with an Adobe® icon listed under the article title. Also in the contents section of the article that is open, there will be a link called "Article PDF". Clicking either of these will open the article in PDF format if you have Adobe Reader® software. You will then be able to view, download and print the article in PDF.

To download Adobe Reader® software, go to "My Profile" and click on the link "My Preferences Main Page" located on the left margin. MD Consult introduces NEW ENHANCEMENTS

MD Consult introduces NEW ENHANCEMENTS:
  • Improved printing
  • Upgraded search features
    • Spellchecking
    • A new “sort by” drop-down box
    • Better phrase interpretation
  • Results now incorporate FIRST Consult content
Improved Printing: When printing pages, images now appear full size and in the appropriate location within the text.

Spellchecking is now incorporated into query interpretation. Terms are checked against a comprehensive Medical and English language dictionary. If the term isn’t found, we’ll offer alternative spellings and give you the option of searching again with the correct spelling.

A new “Sort by” drop-down box in the Advanced Search area of MD Consult is presented at the top of each results page to make it easier to find the kind of results you're looking for.

Better Phrase Interpretation: MD Consult's search function now mimics the behavior of popular web search engines using the Boolean AND and OR operators. So a search for “heart attack renal disease” will be interpreted as “heart attack AND renal disease.” This search improvement means you'll see more results from your searches. Relevancy ranking ensures that documents containing the exact phrase will receive highest placement in the results. You can also search for exact phrases by placing your phrase to search in quotes.

Now search FIRST Consult content from within MD Consult. Clicking on the search result will take you to the appropriate location in the FIRST Consult content (if you are also a FIRST Consult subscriber). You can now connect your MD Consult ID with your FIRST Consult ID, so you'll be automatically logged on to FIRST Consult whenever your MD Consult search results in a FIRST Consult link.

Elsevier Launches new Health Science eJournal and eClinics Collections

Electronic collections offer flexible, affordable healthcare resources for all institutions

St. Louis, 16 May, 2005 - Today Elsevier, the world-leading scientific, technical, and healthcare professions publisher, announced the launch of new online collections of its high impact journals and widely popular Clinics at the 2005 Medical Librarian Association (MLA) meeting. Elsevier's Health Science eJournal and eClinics Collections were created in response to clinical and academic librarian demands for comprehensive yet affordable access to healthcare information via the Internet.

The eJournal Collections, with high impact publications from the Elsevier, Mosby, Saunders, and Churchill Livingstone imprints, are available in the following subjects: Nursing, Internal Medicine, Specialty Medicine, Diagnostic Medicine and Surgery. Some of Elsevier's finest healthcare journals - including The Lancet, The American Journal of Medicine, and Journal of Emergency Nursing - were hand selected for inclusion in the eJournal Collections based on market research involving the clinical library community.

The eClinics Collections provide fully searchable, comprehensive clinical reviews of timely subjects, including diagnosis and therapy, and new technologies.

Both collections offer IP-based access and seamless integration with MD Consult, Elsevier's online clinical information resource, but do not require an existing MD Consult subscription for access. The eJournals Collections include access to five years of archived content, while the eClinics Collections include all issues from 2002 to present.

"Elsevier's new collections combine the best of the literature with robust searching and browsing capabilities," said Glen Campbell, Senior Vice President, US Health Sciences Journals. "This combination strengthens our commitment to provide all of our customers - from small hospitals to large institutions - with the most convenient, flexible tools to help deliver effective patient care."

"Market research and feedback from our institutional salesforce indicated Elsevier's nursing content was in high demand by small hospitals and nursing school libraries that lack the budgets to develop extensive journal holdings in this area." said Patricia Nornhold, Vice President, Nursing Journals. "We crafted the Nursing eJournal collection to satisfy this unmet need in the market. Our goal in developing the eJournals and eClinics Collections is to provide clinical and academic institutions with the tools they need to develop their online holdings and manage spending at the same time."

Both the eJournal and eClinics Collections will be featured at the MLA 2005 conference, which runs from May 14 -19 in San Antonio, Texas.

MD Consult Content Update - March 3, 2005

MD Consult will no longer offer the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, effective January 2005. After a long partnership with the publisher of this journal, the American Society of Nephrology changed their online provider and future arrangements are cost prohibitive. The delay in our announcement is due to our continued efforts to reach a mutually satisfactory solution in order to keep JASN available to MD Consult subscribers.

The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology archive of issues from January 1995 to December 2004 will remain on MD Consult through 2005.

We regret that we can no longer bring you this content through MD Consult and are confident that the American Journal of Kidney Disease (1999 to present), the new 7th edition of Brenner-Rector: The Kidney, and numerous review articles in The Clinics of North America will ably assist you in finding the current and authoritative informative you need.

MDC Content Update - Osler Handbook Added

BOOKS:
  • Cheng-Zaas: The Osler Medical Handbook, 1e (2003 Johns Hopkins University) has been added to the MDC Core Collection.

This handbook covers all of the essential topics encountered in daily practice in an easy-to-follow, standardized outline format.

Dr. Alan Cheng and Aimee Zaas with the Osler Medical Housestaff, in conjunction with faculty, have focused on evidence-guided approaches to the care of patients admitted to a general medical service. It has been modeled on the highly successful Harriet Lane Handbook written by the Johns Hopkins Pediatrics Housestaff.

Each disease-based chapter is designed to address diagnoses commonly encountered at the Johns Hopkins Hospital with a consistent format including Fast Facts, Epidemiology, Clinical Presentation, Diagnostics, Management, Pearls and Pitfalls, and References. Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms are provided throughout the book, as are differential diagnoses for diseases with presentations similar to the main disease being discussed. The Pearls and Pitfalls at the end of each chapter highlight clinical pearls, address concerns relating to comorbidities, give tips for avoidance of error, and mention populations or groups of individuals at particular risk for death and disease.

Reviews of The Osler Medical Handbook

"This handbook will be useful to medical students, house officers, fellows, and busy attending physicians who practice acute care medicine. It would also be a valuable addition to hospital workstations, emergency departments, and other clinical settings."
Paul S. Mueller, MD, Division of General Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota.

    & from student reviews:
" Easy to use organization. Easy to read. Useful info. "Great illustrations; good diagrams. Well written, thorough resource, comprehensive." - Harvard

"The formulary in the back was convenient, I especially liked the small pics showing the path of metabolism/clearance -the diagrams of procedures were great as well as the color photos of the different pathology ." - Univ of South Florida

MD Consult content update - June 14

BOOKS:
  • Ferri: Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient, 6e (2004 Mosby) has been added to MDC Core. It replaces Ferri, 5e (2001 Mosby).

Book Description: Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient is a clear and concise reference for the busy clinician in need of immediate medical information. It provides a fast and efficient way to identify important clinical and laboratory information. Practical Guide emphasizes current, practical clinical information, drug therapeutics, and laboratory medicine.

  • Waddell: The Back Pain Revolution, 2e (2004 Churchill Livingstone) has been added to MDC Pain Medicine Service and MDC Choice Collection - Pain. It replaces Waddell, 1e (1998 Churchill Livingstone).

Book Description: Accessible to all health care professionals, this text provides a guide to understanding and managing back pain and is one of the premier examples of a biopsychosocial approach to medicine. The content challenges unsubstantiated beliefs regarding the best way to treat and manage back pain and presents an interdisciplinary debate on the subject. In a society where patients are demanding more effective approaches to their problems, this resource offers a radical rethink, a necessary step to achieving a more effective method of treatment. The unorthodox spirit of this material places this book at the center of the revolution taking place in the back pain area.

Pediatric Content Changes on MD Consult - December 14th

Effective December 14, 2003 the AAP Red Book and the journals Pediatrics and Pediatrics in Review will no longer be available on MD Consult. Our seven-year contract with the American Academy of Pediatrics concludes at the end of the year, and the AAP does not wish to renew the license. The AAP wishes to refer you to Red Book Online (www.aapredbook.org) to access the Red Book, and to AAP Publications link on PediaLink (www.pedialink.org), their online learning system, in order to access the journals. We regret that we can no longer bring you this content through MD Consult and will be adding additional resources during the coming weeks and months to meet your needs for pediatric content. The new 17th edition of Behrman et al: Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics will be added to MD Consult's Core Collection on December 14 along with Long: Principles & Practice of Pediatric Infectious Disease.

Early in 2004 we will be adding these journals to the Core Collection: Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (2001 forward), Journal of Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology (2002 forward), Pediatric Neurology (2002 forward), and Adolescent Medicine: State of the Art Reviews, Volumes 13 & 14.

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine is written for the entire critical care team: pediatricians, neonatologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, and others who deal with pediatric patients who are critically ill or injured. International in scope, with editorial board members and contributors from around the world, the journal includes a full range of scientific content, including clinical papers, scientific investigations, solicited reviews, and abstracts from pediatric critical care meetings.

- Journal of Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology iis published by Elsevier for the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Published six times annually, the journal includes all aspects of clinical and basic science research in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, as well as molecular biology research as applied to the field, drawing on the expertise of a variety of disciplines including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, reproduction and gynecology, reproductive and pediatric endocrinology, genetics, and molecular biology.

- Pediatric Neurology publishes timely peer-reviewed clinical and research articles covering all aspects of the developing nervous system, featuring up-to-the-minute publication of the latest advances in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of pediatric neurologic disorders.
